Moderne Tile glaze series

The Moderne Tile glaze series is inspired by the Streamline Moderne era of the 1930s-'40s. The glazes in this palette come in a gloss finish and are based on historic samples from the Pomona Tile Company, whose tile were popular at the time. These colorful pastel glazes were commonly used in bathrooms as field tile and were accented by a dark horizontal trim.

Moderne Tile in historic American architecture

The Streamline Moderne era began with the stock market crash of 1929, so design became more simplified and tended be more industrial and functional. Buildings were often asymmetrical with rounded corners, horizontal lines, and nautical details. During the Streamline Moderne era, pastel square tile was traditionally complemented with dark trim pieces, often at the cap and base. As Streamline Moderne evolved, more color was added to bathrooms, eventually evolving into the pink bathroom trend in later decades.
